4 Interior Styling Secrets For A Home With Soul

by jacki tucker

The homes that stop you in your tracks are rarely the ones where everything matches perfectly.

In fact, I’d say it’s usually the opposite.

The most beautiful spaces are the ones that feel a little unexpected. The ones where your eye keeps moving. Where there’s something interesting hiding in every corner. A sculptural lamp. A beautiful old vase with a story behind it. A piece of art that makes you pause.

A soulful home isn’t created by following a formula. It’s created by layering pieces that bring personality, warmth and a little bit of magic into your everyday spaces.

Great interior styling is about creating a home that feels collected, considered and completely yours.

Here are four of my favourite home styling tips for creating a space with depth, character and soul.

1. Add oversized statement pieces and let them do the talking

If your room feels like it’s missing something, chances are it doesn’t need more little accessories.  It needs a moment.

One beautifully oversized piece can completely transform a space. A huge piece of artwork leaning casually against the wall. A dramatic pendant light hanging low over a dining table. An oversized vase filled with branches. A statement chair that demands attention.

Large scale pieces create confidence. They stop a room from feeling bitty and give your eyes somewhere to land. Don’t be afraid of pieces that feel a little too big. Often, those are the pieces that make a room feel finished.

2. Layer in texture. Lots of it.

Texture is what makes a home feel inviting. It’s what creates that feeling of wanting to sink in, curl up and stay awhile.

I love to think beyond colour and focus on how things feel. Natural timber, woven rattan, handmade, soft linen, vintage brass, boucle, wool, glass and stone all bring something different to the conversation.

The magic happens when these materials sit together.

These little contrasts create warmth and depth. They’re what transform a room from simply decorated into a space that feels layered and lived in.

3. Create atmosphere with layers of lighting

Good lighting is the jewellery of a room.

One lonely ceiling light trying to do all the work?  We need to have a little chat.

For a cosy cocooning home, use layers of lighting. Lamps tucked into corners. Floor lamps beside your favourite chair. Pendant lights creating a focal point. Soft pools of light that make a room feel intimate and inviting.

Statement lighting is one of the easiest ways to add personality to your home. A beautiful pendant or unique lamp isn’t just practical. It becomes part of the story of the room.

Lighting really changes the mood and creates atmosphere.  In my home it makes me feel like somewhere I want to spend time.

4. Mix vintage and new for a home with soul

This might be my favourite styling secret.

The homes that feel the most interesting aren’t filled with pieces from one collection or one era. They have contrast.  They have history.  They have personality.

Vintage pieces bring character, patina and stories. New pieces bring comfort, practicality and a fresh perspective.

Together, they create balance.

A contemporary sofa paired with an old timber side table. Modern artwork beside a vintage brass mirror. A beautiful new pendant hanging above a vintage dining table.

When everything is brand new, a home can sometimes feel a little flat. But add in something aged, something imperfect, something with a story, and suddenly the whole room comes alive.

Your home shouldn’t look like it came straight from a showroom.  It should feel like you.

Always decorate from the heart to make a space that reflects your personality. You will be amazed at how magical your home looks and feels.
