Bigger Is Better: How to Make Your Rug Work Hard for Your Room

A rug isn’t just a floor covering.  It’s the piece that anchors your furniture, sets the mood, and brings a room together. And if it’s too small, it just looks… a bit lost. The trick? go bigger.

Lounge & Dining Areas

Plonk a rug under your lounge suite and let it do the work. Ideally, all your furniture should sit on it - front legs on at the very least. This gives the room cohesion, stops your sofa from floating awkwardly, and lets the rug really show off.

For dining tables, size matters even more: make sure your rug is large enough that when you pull out your chairs, they stay on the rug. Nothing looks more off than chairs caught halfway on and halfway off, bunching and scraping, so give yourself some breathing room.

Bedroom

Think beyond the foot of the bed. Pull your rug under the bed so at least the bottom third sits on it. This frames the bed, softens the space, and adds warmth underfoot. It’s an easy trick to make the room feel curated and considered, and just a tad more  luxurious.

Layering for Style (and Scale)

Love a rug but it’s a touch too small? Layer it on top of a larger neutral rug—jute, sisal, anything natural. It adds texture, scale, and interest, letting your favourite rug take centre stage without compromising on proportion.

Exceptions

Runners in hallways and kitchens are the only times you can get away with smaller pieces.  But even then, length is key. A galley kitchen deserves a runner that stretches the full space between counter and breakfast bar. Hallways should feel pulled together, not chopped up by undersized rugs.

The result? A room that feels grounded, soulful, and effortlessly styled. Bigger rugs give your furniture purpose, your space scale, and a subtle touch of drama that no small rug can deliver. Sometimes, the simplest change makes the biggest impact.
